Dermot O’Brien

Principal

Dermot O’Brien has over 30 years’ experience in taxation consultancy and is widely regarded as one of Ireland’s leading VAT experts. He spent 10 years working in VAT with the Revenue Commissioners, where he gained significant expertise in VAT law and administration and developed lasting relationships at all levels of the Revenue service.

Dermot further developed his tax expertise in the private sector, becoming Head of VAT Services at KPMG and, subsequently, VAT Partner at BDO Simpson Xavier. A past President of the Irish Taxation Institute (2006-2007), Dermot is widely known and respected among his peers, and is regularly invited to comment publicly on taxation matters and has assisted overseas governments in formulating tax policy. He represents the ITI on the VAT Sub-Committee of the Taxes Administration Liaison Committee (TALC), having previously chaired that forum.

Dermot is a former author and editor of the ITI’s publication Value-Added Tax, and has lectured extensively on VAT issues, both in Ireland and overseas. Recently, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland published his most recent book on “VAT on Property – Law and Practice”.

Gabrielle Dillon

Director

Gabrielle Dillon is a Director of Dermot O’Brien & Associates. A respected specialist in VAT for many years, Gabrielle previously worked as a VAT manager with BDO Simpson Xavier.

Gabrielle qualified as an Associate of the Irish Taxation Institute in 2002 and holds a Barrister-at-Law degree and a BA in European Studies (Law). She has experience in a broad range of VAT issues at both Irish and European level, and has a particular interest in VAT and property.

Gabrielle has lectured in VAT on the Irish Taxation Institute's Tax Technician programme and its AITI programme. She is co-author of the ITI’s publication Value-Added Tax. She has written extensively on various VAT issues, she writes the “VAT News” column in the Irish Tax Review, and she is a member of that journal’s editorial committee. She is also a member of the ITI’s Professional Services Committee.
